Senior Development Engineer

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Senior Development Engineer, while under the guidance of senior unit members will support the renewable energy group during the diligence and early engineering work of new project opportunities.

Specifically, the Senior Development Engineer is responsible for reviewing early engineering work and documents, supporting in tendering processes and negotiation of project construction contracts, and supporting senior members of the group in various tasks as required. It also leads communication and coordination with Engineering and technical related 3rd parties such as Owners Engineering Consultants, Independent Engineers, Engineering Design Consultants to name a few examples.

The Development Engineer performs field engineering duties to diagnose and solve onsite problems during construction, commissioning, and start-up. The Senior Development Engineer researches and learns key technical aspects of electrical and mechanical equipment for installation and operations, tracks material quality and deliveries, assists in qualifying subcontractors, and supports the program engineer with submittals, drawings, and requests for information.

Main accountabilities:

  • Reviews greenfield development opportunities to identify potential risks, concerns, or other relevant issues from the technical perspective.
  • Assists in drafting and answering questions regarding technical documents to/from developers, financial institutions, and third-party contractors.
  • Prepares and analyzes technical tender documents received from third parties in response to project RFPs.
  • Supports selection process of major equipment providers and contractors by reviewing and analyzing relevant documents, contracts, pricing schedules, etc.
  • Performs engineering design and analysis of necessary construction changes.
  • Reviews system design documents for renewables projects (e.g., Utility Scale Solar PV, Battery Storage, Wind, etc.).
  • Attends and actively participates in weekly/monthly EPC progress meetings and provides feedback to ensure on-time completion.
  • Completes technical evaluation of electrical systems to ensure reliability and quality assurance.
  • Effectively manages the project schedule and budget by estimating costs and timelines. Implements effective solutions and designs to minimize costs while maintaining quality.
  • Updates the site progress and other reports and provides these reports to project relevant members.
  • Additional duties, as required.

Travel: Up to 20%

Location: Houston, TX

Minimum qualifications:

  • More than 3 years’ experience in the renewable energy industry (plus)
  • Experience working on a construction site
  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or related field
  • Computer literate with strong Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, outlook) skill set
  • IT peripheral hardware knowledge

  • Quality Assurance experience is a real plus

Physical demands & working conditions:

  • Sitting/Standing/Flexibility: Ability to frequently perform physical tasks including standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, bending, twisting, squatting, and reaching approximately 75% of the time while on sites; ability to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environment
  • Walking:  Ability to walk .25 to .5 miles per day, including across unpaved and rough surfaces when on the solar power plant site.
  • Speech/Reading:  Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
  • Lifting: Ability to frequently lift items weighing up to 60 pounds
  • Vision/Hearing: Ability to interpret and follow a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
  • Tolerance to Extreme Weather Conditions: Ability to work in outdoor and adverse weather conditions while on sites
  • Safety: Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary
